Saudi Arabia boosts efforts to fight human trafficking mechanism
Saudi Arabia:
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Monday signed an
agreement with the Saudi Human Rights Commission to combat human trafficking in
the Kingdom.
The agreement envisages strengthening mechanisms and strengthening institutional
capacity to identify, assist and protect victims.
The National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT), composed of members
of seven government entities, also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU)
for cooperation in combatting trafficking in persons with the United Nations
Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The committee’s National Referral Mechanism, launched in March, helps combat
people trafficking by outlining best practice for handling individual cases. It
also details coordinated roles and responsibilities for relevant authorities in
the Kingdom.
The framework was launched in cooperation with UNODC and IOM. It coincided with
the launch of an anonymous digital reporting service, embedded in the NCCHT
website, that allows people to provide information on possible human-trafficking
violations in the Kingdom. The Kingdom is making all efforts to combat human
trafficking by promoting the prosecution and conviction of perpetrators and the
provision of medical, psychological and legal assistance to victims.
